Vortex Martial Arts Gym LLC reviews

Rated 5.0/5 across 37 Google reviews.

I was visiting Bloomington for work in mid-August and reached out to Nick to see if I could drop in for a class. He was very gracious and didn't charge me a mat fee. Coach Nick and his students are incredibly welcoming, technical, and love to train hard. Coach Nick showed me some great front choke details that allowed me to immediately apply the technique in live training. I highly recommend Vortex Martial Arts, as well as coach Nick, to anyone in the Bloomington area looking for high quality jiu jitsu and martial arts training!
The gym had a good, friendly culture. As a beginner, I felt welcomed. I remember Coach Nick being particularly friendly and knowledgeable. Coach Xavier was also cool. I don't think I ended up seeing Coach Mick as much, but he seemed cool from my limited interactions with him. Disclaimer: I trained at Vortex for about a month in the summer of 2019 because I was in the area for a summer internship (I would have trained there longer, but my internship in the area ended). As such, this isn't the most current review. However, I'd assume that the culture is still great, like it was in 2019.
I am a complete beginner and have been going for about a month and it's been nothing outside of great. If you're interested in learning a new skill or understanding yourself more, this is the place for you. You get a week worth of ALL classes completely FREE; guided by experienced trainers making sure that you're practicing safe techniques and that you go home injury free. I've noticed that Vortex is an incredibly diverse gym which takes you in no matter what shape, age, sex, or background you are. Belts are not given out, you will be challenged and expected to stay engaged as you are turned into a well developed human being. Mick(owner/trainer) is always there and notices the effort put in and how you treat people around you. Your positive attitude and work will be rewarded if you stay persistent and try. If you're interested in being a part of an unforgettable community, trying to get into a healthier shape, be able to defend yourself
I started training at Vortex Martial Arts Gym a little over six years ago. As an older person starting my martial arts journey it wasn't easy but my coach Mick Williams showed great patience. He is one of the most knowledgeable Martial artists in the region. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He pushes everyone to be a better Martial artist and he is genuinely interested in how we are doing away from the gym. I love the diverse group I get to train with. They welcome everyone here.
The best martial arts gym in town. Great coaches with knowledge and experience whether you train for competition, self-defense or fun. Fantastic teammates and friendly atmosphere. Anyone interested in BJJ, Kick-boxing, MMA should try!
Vortex is where I first began my BJJ training, and I believe this is the place to go in Bloomington if you want friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate instructors. Even though I've moved away, I make an effort every time I come into town to stop in and train. Highly recommend!
