I attended class today (Sunday) at 10 am while visiting from out-of-town. The entire gym including the front desk area, mat space, bathroom, and changing rooms was immaculately clean. Sally and Alex were very welcoming and accommodating. Alex, who taught class, was a very knowledgable and detail-oriented jiu jitsu instructor. I have been training since 2009, and have attended my fair share of BJJ classes. Alex explains the nuances of techniques better than most jiu jitsu instructors. It is refreshing to take a class where the instructor has clearly spent time thinking about what he is teaching and has a deep enough understanding of it to articulately present it in a format where important details are emphasized. Sally was also a very helpful assistant instructor. Alex and Sally both went around the room helping students refine the techniques we practiced in class. Beyond the level of instruction and cleanliness of the facility, it was v
Common Ground Jiu Jitsu is an exceptional martial arts academy that truly lives up to its name. The instructors, Alex and Sally, are not just highly skilled practitioners but also outstanding teachers who have mastered the art of effective instruction. What sets this academy apart is the instructors' ability to break down complex techniques and concepts in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Their teaching methodology is incredibly methodical, organized, and well-structured, which greatly enhances the learning experience for students of all levels. One of the most impressive aspects of Common Ground Jiu Jitsu for me is how they introduce live training from day one. They have expertly designed their curriculum to ensure that resistance training is both safe and beneficial for all students. The level of detail in their instructions is truly remarkable. The instructors don't just show you what to do; they explain the why and how beh
I have been training at Common Ground BJJ for awhile now, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. Alex is an exceptional instructor who is passionate about teaching BJJ and helping his students grow both on and off the mat. The training environment at Common Ground is welcoming, supportive, and inclusive. I've never felt intimidated or out of place, even as a new student. The students and instructors are all friendly and eager to help one another improve. Alex's instruction is top-notch. He is incredibly knowledgeable and able to explain techniques in a way that is easy to understand and implement. The facilities at Common Ground are clean and well-maintained, with ample space for training. Safety is a top priority, and the mats are disinfected regularly to ensure a hygienic environment. Overall, I would highly recommend Common Ground BJJ to anyone looking to start or continue their BJJ journey. The combination of excellent instru
As a white belt who has relocated a few times and travels for work, I’ve been to a handful of jiu-jitsu schools, and Common Ground is hands down the best. When I joined, I went through a screening process and was introduced to the school’s policies and rules. At first, I was a little annoyed, but after training for a while, I realized how important it is. Jiu-jitsu can be a dangerous sport, and making sure the people who come in are a good fit creates a safer and more positive environment. As a non-binary person, I felt welcomed, my pronouns were respected, I never felt othered. In a male-dominated sport like jiu-jitsu, it can be tough to find a place where you feel safe, but Common Ground provided that. It’s an amazing community where I truly felt like I belonged. They actually address conflict if there is any, and know how to communicate with kindness and compassion, and not with aggression. Sally and Alex are super technical and expe
This is a great place to train. Alex is super knowledgeable in the gi/nogi and self defense. His curriculum is well thought out and very comprehensive. He utilizes the ecological approach and I really enjoy it because it gives students more opportunities to get reps in a controlled manner where we can discover the answers on our own with guidance and tips from Alex. You get to share your experience and ask questions after each game and we also get ample time for free rolling and drilling after. Sally is also great. She is the assistant instructor and manager. It’s nice to have 2 coaches on the mat to get feed back from. She also fills in for Alex as the head coach at times and she is also very knowledgeable and technical. She is also very friendly and very easy to interact with. They know their students and actually pair students together for the games so both people get the most out of the games. The fellow students are great too. They
Common Ground Jiu Jitsu has been such a gift for both me and my daughter. Alex and Sally are very passionate about jiu jitsu and it shows. As a middle-aged woman starting martial arts, I was initially nervous about the physical demand, but Sally has been incredible. She is exceptionally patient and very mindful of potential injuries, making sure I’m training safely while still challenging me. At the same time, my teen daughter has been attending the girls' class and the change in her confidence is remarkable. My daughter is petite and so is Sally. Having a strong female role model as an instructor, who is also petite like her, has made a world of difference for her. Whether you're a teen looking for empowerment or an adult starting later in life, this is a safe, professional, and inspiring place to train.
