I have been training at Lanistae for about a year and a half and am so happy I made this my academy of choice when moving to the Bay area. What brought me through the door was Milton Bastos' (head instructor) accolades, such as being a multiple time world champion, and personal referrals. Here are a few highlights: 1) Full schedule of classes throughout the day for beginners, intermediate, and advanced (gi and no-gi). Milton adjusts the technique to accommodate the students in attendance. 2) Beautiful facility all around: clean and open with plenty of mat space and a lounge area 3) High level training partners: whether competitors or hobbyists, the talent here is top notch. Also, you will often find multiple black belts on the mats--all who bring various skills and feedback during training. 4) Friendly and safe environment: Many families and children, numerous women of all levels, and people of various ages train here. If you're new to
I recently moved to the Bay Area and was looking for a BJJ gym to continue my training. The most important things to me were quality of instruction and sense of community at the gym, and I can comfortably say that JG Academy is exceeding my expectations in both of those categories. All the instructors are clearly very knowledgeable and skilled BJJ practitioners, everyone at the gym is respectful and friendly, and there are good training opportunities for all skill levels. The gym is also really clean and has nice facilities. I would highly recommend JG Academy in Los Altos for anyone looking to get into BJJ or continue their training in the Bay!
As someone who has trained for many years, there's a lot of things I look for in a BJJ school that would make me feel comfortable recommending a place, especially as a school owner myself, I need to know if a place is great. Even with reputations, if I haven't been, then I won't just tell people to go. I can honestly say that JG Academy here in Los Altos is one of those schools that aren't just stellar but a flagship where others can come to learn a lot from. Including someone like me. The staff is so friendly, the students are all walks of life and as you go into the upper belts the skill level is high. The facility itself is bright and clean. Kids program is absolutely amazing with top notch instruction. For anyone looking to start BJJ or continue in their journey, you have to stop by and give it a try. It's a world class school and there's a reason a number of practitioners from other schools frequent this place as a supplement to th
I've been attending JG Academy in Los Altos for about five months now. It's a great school. I tried a couple of other BJJ schools in the area before settling on JG. Ultimately, it was a gut decision based on Omar's high quality instruction, and great attitude, during my trial classes. (Also, it was the only school to allow multiple trial classes.) He's great at taking it slow and pointing out the important details. This gut decision definitely panned out. I've mostly attended fundamentals classes which Omar teaches. The fundamentals repeatedly cycle through 10 weeks of material. It provides you a good opportunity for repetition of your fundamental techniques. Classes are structured in the typical way. Over the course of an hour you warm up, learn a technique, and then roll (spar) for maybe 20 minutes. Overall, the instruction is good, and generally everyone is welcoming. I highly recommend this school.
The coaches are amazing!!! They know so much and make things easy to understand. Even if something's new to me, they explain it in a way that makes sense. Plus, they're really friendly and always ready to help. The people I train with are super nice too. Everyone is helpful and they make training fun. We all work together, and they've taught me a lot. It's not just about learning from the coaches - the other students have given me great tips and advice. What's really cool is how everyone is welcome here, no matter how much Jiu-Jitsu you know. Whether you're just starting out or you've been doing it for a while, you'll fit right in. I'm so glad I found JG Academy.
I never do reviews, but I have to make an exception here. JG is the best gym I've ever been. There are fundamentals, advanced and comp. training classes, which supplement each other. The professors are super nice to everyone and they are also very experienced as most of them are actively competing (just to mention, professor Javier Gomez recently got the 1st place in 2022 IBJJF No-Gi World Championship). There are also great and supportive training partners as many of the folks are actively competing as well. And last but not least, JG is not a "I-train-and-I-leave" gym. There an amazing and friendly environment as most of the people there are friends and they spend time together off the mats.
