My kids and I signed up exactly a month ago, but got sick right after so we really didn't start training until three weeks ago (but that's besides the point). The experience so far has been phenomenal! I was worried the kids (ages 4 and 5) wouldn't like it, but they love every bit of it! Professor Kimo, Coach Ray and Coach Freddie are great with the kids! They make it fun and enjoyable while still being able to teach techniques. Additionally, the coaches give every bit of attention to ALL the kids. I have an older son that I took to a different gym for jiu jitsu years ago, and I noticed the instruction there compared to Heritage JJ is like night and day. It is much more structured here in my opinion, which I feel helps the kids learn better. I've also enjoyed training here. The vibe is great... very laid back and welcoming. It's a reflection of Professor Kimo. When I first came in to check it out, I immediately felt the welcoming vibe.
I came here on a Friday during an "open mat" session. For those that don't know, open mat isn't a class where an instructor gives you moves and students practice them with other students. It's a session where fighters of all skill levels spar with each other. That would've been an intimidating setting for a total noob like me but everyone on the mat took time to show me the basics and helped to make me feel comfortable enough to ask my questions... And now I've found a new sport I'm really enjoying! Professor Kimo's built a warm and welcoming community so if you're on the fence about trying the sport, brush the nerves aside and we'll see you at the gym :) UPDATE: One year later and I'm still here. I've made new friends, earned medals, and gained a new family. Amazing place to learn and grow in the sport of jiu jitsu.
Since becoming a mom, so much of my time and energy has been focused on my children — and while that’s a joy, I realized I had been putting myself on the back burner. I finally decided it was time to show up for me, and committing to Coach Kimo’s weekly women’s self-defense/BJJ class has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The environment is welcoming, safe, and fun — no intimidation, just real support and learning. Coach Kimo does an incredible job teaching practical techniques while building confidence and awareness. I leave each class feeling stronger, more capable, and more connected to my body. If you're looking for a way to boost your self-confidence, increase your self-awareness, and get your body moving in a meaningful way, I highly recommend joining this class. You won’t regret it! Will update again once the kids start training! 💪🏾
"My kids have been attending Heritage Jiu Jitsu for the past year and I couldn't be happier with the experience. The instructors are amazing with children- patient, encouraging, and skilled at making the classes both fun and educational. My kids have not only learned self-defense techniques but have also gained confidence, discipline, and respect for others. The environment is positive and supportive, and I love seeing how excited my children are to attend each class. I highly recommend Heritage Jiu Jitsu, for any parent looking to build their child's physical and mental strength. We recently found out my son has Autism stage 1. He went from being quiet, shy to a happy, positive kiddo. We definitely have seen the improvement in his behavior. ♥️
I’ve been taking the Women’s Self Defense class for 2 months now with Coach Kimo and it has been physically and mentally enlightening, challenging, and rewarding. Coach Kimo is a knowledgeable kind, firm, person and teacher. Each class has taught me to be more aware of my surroundings and how to approach potential situations that I would be able to handle if needed to defend myself. I look forward to learning more and becoming a part of the Heritage Jiu Jitsu community. 100% recommend joining this Womens Self Defense Class!
Great instruction and training along with a welcoming environment. Academy is brand new and very clean. Tuition cost is very affordable and posted up directly on the front page of the website. No uniform requirements besides the traditional IBJJF approved color gis of white, black, and blue. I appreciate that Professor Kimo encourages rolls where our partners take care of each other, so we can focus on longevity and training consistency without putting each other out due to injuries. Higher belts here are kind and give me tips as well. Great place for beginners like myself!
