I can't say enough great things about Coach/Owner Zach and the amazing team at Island City Jiu Jitsu. Coach Zach is a BJJ black belt as well as a former MMA fighter, so he has a lot of experience and depth of knowledge. I've been training Muay Thai for several years now, and Island City Jiu Jitsu is the newest gym I've started attending—and it's been a fantastic experience so far. Their Muay Thai classes are a great balance of technique and conditioning. Coach Zach and Coach Uche do an amazing job tailoring each class to meet the needs of both beginners and more experienced individuals, making sure everyone gets the most out of their training. On top of that I just started Jiu Jitsu classes as well and Coach Zach as well as the Coach Vag are great at breaking down complex techniques into simple, easy-to-understand steps which makes it the perfect place for beginners. So whether you’re interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, or MMA
My 8-year-old son and I have been training here since the gym opened in 2024, and it’s been an incredible experience. The coaches are highly knowledgeable and do a great job supporting everyone—from complete beginners to those training at a competitive level. The environment is respectful, encouraging, and truly community-focused. Training here is not only fun, it’s thoughtfully structured to help you improve efficiently and build real strength. The gym is always clean, well maintained, and full of positive energy. It makes martial arts feel accessible to anyone, no matter your starting point. They offer a wide variety of classes seven days a week, so there’s always an opportunity to train. Thanks to the coaching and support here, I even stepped way outside my comfort zone and competed in my first tournament—coming home with a gold medal. If you’re thinking about starting, this is the place to go. Come train!
This gym recently opened and is off to a great start. Zach, the head owner/coach, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and former MMA fighter. He is extremely knowledgeable, but also welcoming and friendly to everyone, no matter their level of experience. The physical gym itself is very nice. There's a big screen TV, a full-size arcade game, and big comfy chairs to lounge in at the front. The back has the mat space, which is large and clean. The classes have a good mix of students at different levels. Overall, a great place to train grappling, kickboxing or MMA (or all three) in Alameda.
Our kids (ages 5 & 7) have been attending Island City Jiu Jitsu since they opened, and our experience has been wonderful! The space has been beautifully refreshed with thoughtful touches throughout (including a large TV so you can watch the class live!). Coach Zach and Coach Margie are absolutely incredible managing the kids classes. They are consistent with their approach of balancing discipline, respect, skill-building, and listening skills. They take their roles seriously and strive to cultivate a positive, age-appropriate environment, while building both athletic and life-skills. Thank you ICJJ!!
This gym has truly exceeded my expectations in every way. The sense of community here is incredible—everyone from beginners to advanced fighters is welcoming and supportive. The gym is spotless, with top-notch equipment that’s well-maintained, creating a clean and professional environment. The instructors are highly skilled, offering personalized attention and expert guidance that helps you improve quickly while staying safe. Whether you're here for fitness or to seriously hone your MMA skills, this place is the perfect choice!
My 7 year old son started at Island City Jiu Jitsu soon after they opened and we've had a fantastic experience so far! Coach Zach and Coach Margie strike a great balance of making the classes fun and engaging, while also providing structure and discipline to keep all students safe and appropriately challenged. Island City is an excellent addition to the youth sports and activities options in Alameda!
