Standing Guard Break

Also known as: Guard Opening · Stand-Up Guard Break · Knee Wedge Break

The safest way out of closed guard: control the hips, stand up in base, and let gravity plus a knee wedge break the ankles open — landing you in headquarters to start passing.

Guard Pass · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at White belt

Starts from Closed Guard as the passer → lands in Headquarters.

The details that make it work

  1. Pin their hips (two grips on the belt line) and stand one leg at a time, head up, never bent forward.
  2. Once standing, push the knee of their bottom-hook leg down or wedge your knee under their crossed ankles.
  3. The instant the guard opens, staple one leg between yours — that is headquarters; the pass starts now.
