Also known as: Sit Out · Sit-Through · Switch (adjacent)
The wrestler’s exit from bottom turtle: shoot one leg through to sit facing away, clear their grip, and turn back to neutral — often ending behind the over-committed attacker.
Escape · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at White belt
Starts from Turtle as the turtled player → lands in Standing.
The details that make it work
Trap the wrist of the arm around your waist first — the sit-out fails while that hand is free.
Shoot the inside leg through and sit your hip to the mat, head coming up and out.
Turn TOWARD the trapped wrist to face them, or spin behind if their chest slides over your back.
Where it goes wrong
Sitting out without wrist control, which just rebuilds the same turtle two feet away.
How opponents counter it
Float the hips and re-square behind
Snap the head down as they turn to face
Is the Sit-Out legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
