Front Headlock Escape
Also known as: Headlock Posture Escape · Wrist Strip and Circle
Survive the most dangerous choking position in grappling: protect the neck, strip the chin strap, and circle back up to neutral.
Escape · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at White belt
Starts from Front Headlock as the defender (head down) → lands in Clinch.
The details that make it work
- Chin down and shoulders shrugged the moment the position appears — deny the chin strap before anything else.
- Two hands strip their one wrist; posture drives up and INTO them, never pulling straight back.
- Circle toward the side of their locked hands to unwind the grip as you stand.
Where it goes wrong
- Pulling straight backward, which feeds the guillotine and the snap-to-anaconda.
How opponents counter it
- Re-snap as posture rises
- Switch to the go-behind when the defender over-commits to the wrist fight
Is the Front Headlock Escape legal in competition?
