Climb to S-Mount
Also known as: High Mount Climb · S-Mount Transition
Walk your knees up under their armpits and curl one leg into the "S" — trading a stable mount for the best armbar launchpad in the sport.
Transition · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at Blue belt
Starts from Mount as the mounted player (top) → lands in S-Mount.
The details that make it work
- Climb one knee at a time as their elbows fight; high mount strips their frames of leverage.
- When they turn slightly, slide the knee behind their head and curl the other leg under their far shoulder.
- Weight stays through your hips on their chest — an S-mount you sit up in is an escape you gifted.
Where it goes wrong
- Climbing with hips floating, giving the elbow-knee escape a free lane underneath.
How opponents counter it
- Elbow-knee escape during the climb
- Turn fully to the side before the S locks and hunt half guard
