Guard Pull
Also known as: Pulling Guard · Guard Jump (variation) · Sitting Guard Pull
Skip the takedown battle and bring the fight to the ground on your terms by sitting into guard with grips already established.
Transition · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 1/5 · Usually learned at White belt
Starts from Standing as the either grappler → lands in Closed Guard.
The details that make it work
- Grips before butt: control a sleeve/collar (gi) or a wrist/collar tie (no-gi) BEFORE your weight drops.
- Pull them into you as you sit — a good pull off-balances the opponent into your guard, a bad one just sits down.
- Land with a foot on the hip or legs closed; never land flat and disconnected.
Where it goes wrong
- Sitting down without connection, which is not a guard pull — it is giving up two points and a free passing round.
How opponents counter it
- Yank the grips free and start passing before the guard closes
- Time a knee-cut as they sit
Is the Guard Pull legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
