The rubber guard’s signature finish: your shin slides across their throat under their chin, hands clasp behind their head, and the choke closes between shin and skull.
Submission · Air Choke · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 5/5 · Usually learned at Purple belt
Starts from Rubber Guard as the rubber guard player → ends the match (submission).
The details that make it work
From mission control, feed your foot across their throat — instep under the chin, not across the jaw.
Both hands pull the back of their head down onto your shin.
Add the other leg over their back to kill posture; the tap comes fast once the shin seats.
Where it goes wrong
Forcing the foot across against full posture, losing the guard entirely when it slips.
How opponents counter it
Posture before the foot crosses the center line
Stack through the shin and pass the loose legs
Is the Gogoplata legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
History & naming
Existed in old judo (kagato jime) but revived and popularized through Eddie Bravo’s rubber guard and Shinya Aoki’s MMA finishes.
