There is nothing better, after a long day, then walking through an unassuming glass door, down a few stairs, and into Unity Jiu Jitsu. Murilo Santana is probably one of the top jiu jitsu instructors in the world. I've been training at Unity for a few years now, and there's often a small detail taught that completely changes how I do a move. Not only that but Murilo cares for every student - not just their jiu jitsu progress but their life, and has created a warm, welcoming community where everyone helps each other improve. In addition to Murilo, the other instructors are also world class, and make themselves available to help everyone all the time. Having trained at a few gyms before, I would say Unity is the best gym for women in NYC. Other gyms have women's locker rooms 1/3 of the space of the men's, at Unity its the same size. There is a huge group of women that train in general, and always a large group of women on the mats. Everyon
I had the pleasure of visiting Unity Jiu-Jitsu in NYC for their open mat this past weekend, and I have to say it was an excellent experience. The gym itself is clean, well-maintained, and has a welcoming atmosphere. A lot of people showed up, making for a variety of great rolls, and everyone I encountered was respectful and friendly. Being able to train at such a legendary school was a memorable experience. The level of talent in the room was impressive, but the vibe was still approachable and supportive. A friend and coach of mine, Suleyman, who trains at Unity, recommended I check it out. If you’re in NYC and looking for top-tier training in a respectful and professional setting, I highly recommend giving Unity a visit—whether it’s for an open mat, a class, or just to soak in the atmosphere of a world-renowned gym.
Update: still the best place in NYC, possibly even *the world,* to learn high level jiujitsu and get the best training. No matter what your goals are - to get into shape, learn new skills, or to become a world champion, the instructors here will help you achieve those goals. Every one of the instructors here are high level and decorated in the sport. Why would you choose to go elsewhere when you can learn from some of the best? Unity is a great community of hardworking good people who love jiujitsu. It's one of the best bjj schools in NYC and under the tutelage of Murilo Santana and his instructors, your bjj will definitely excel. I came here as a blue belt that was actually just a white belt in skill in 2017 and under Junny and Murilo, I have become a much better practitioner. Although it's really difficult sometimes, I appreciate the intensity and the high standards that students here are held to.
Unity Jiu Jitsu School is a truly exceptional place to train. From the moment you step onto the mats, you're welcomed into a community that radiates positivity and dedication to the art of Jiu Jitsu. The people here are incredible—fellow students are supportive, enthusiastic, and committed to helping each other grow, regardless of skill level. The coaches at Unity are nothing short of spectacular. Their deep knowledge, innovative teaching methods, and personal attention to every student make training sessions both challenging and rewarding. They have an amazing ability to break down techniques into precise, understandable steps, ensuring that everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners can grasp and apply them.
I was fortunate to spend both June and July of this year training at Unity Jiu Jitsu. The instruction is excellent (as expected), but I was shocked on how friendly and nice everyone is at the gym. All the instructors and staff knew my by the end of my second week training there. The students at the gym are also super friendly as well. The training is very intense, but I never felt in danger while rolling at full intensity there. I would 100% recommend anyone interested in training BJJ to checkout Unity.
Finding a Jiu Jitsu school with such an incredibly talented training staff is rare. Finding one with such a welcoming welcoming atmosphere is a equally rare. However, Unity Jiu Jitsu possesses both in abundance, making it a true treasure for the JJ community in NYC. As a competitive black belt, I can confidently say that I wholeheartedly recommend Unity to anyone, from beginners to actively competing black belts. I look forward to visiting Unity every time I’m in the city; it will always be the highlight of my trip.
