Dan Covel Martial Arts NJ Cedar Grove reviews

Rated 5.0/5 across 44 Google reviews.

Ive been training for 22 years. I’ve known Dan since 2008. I knew him to be a sound technician and dedicated student of the art. I met him as a purple belt and he was a brown belt and judo black belt. I finally came up to his place to train as I was up in North Jersey for the weekend. I made an 11 am class. The space was clean and well organized plus it has a shower for people looking to train on their lunch break. The students were warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Dan put on a well structured class focused on pins and head an arm chokes from side mount. After we had open mat. I was impressed with all of his students. They were tough and technical. Dan is better than I remember. I felt like a baby rolling with him. If you’re in the Newark area, I can’t recommend enough. I haven’t trained in his Manhattan spot, but if he’s teaching you should go. James Chiariello, 3rd degree black belt, Balance Studios
Ive been training with Dan for about 7 years now and aside from the excellent jiu jitsu instruction, the facilities he instructs at are no different. Dan has some of the most affordable jiu jitsu programs in the tri state area for the best quality. Most importantly Dan always tries to make training accessible as often as possible to accomodate people’s work schedules. Whether you’re looking to work out, compete or learn some Self defense, hit up Dan! You won’t regret that you did!
Dan Covel’s approach to a jiu jitsu school is unmatched. The technique is incredible, the culture is welcoming and tight knit. There’s an emphasis on exceptional training above all else. I trained with Dan for a little over a year before moving to a new state. I came back to visit after 6+ years out of state and was welcomed back with open arms. If you want a dedicated coach with exceptional technique and a strong culture within the program then this is the spot.
I've trained under Dan for just over a year now and cannot recommend his instruction highly enough. Classes are thoughtfully structured and progress through a technique/position over the week. Typically, one week is focused on an attacking sequence and the following week is focused on the defense. Throughout the progression, focus is given to correct execution and grappling fundamentals (head position, hand fighting, push and pull, etc.). There's no pressure to advance the progression if your execution in earlier stages need attention but Dan ensures there's a challenge for every level of student. Dan is very observant and provides clear feedback. When the time comes for live rounds, we begin standing and have no partner restrictions based on belt. The environment Dan has created is tough while being safe and inclusive. Come through for a trail class and enjoy phenomenal training.
I've trained at Covel's for nearly a year now. Dan dedicates himself to providing high quality instruction to all of his students (both Newark and New York locations). He provides full attention to all students as they drill and make sure that they receive the appropriate feedback. There has never been a moment where I ever felt that I wasn't getting 100% of his effort. Students in his gyms also hold themselves to the same high standards that Dan sets for himself and for us, both beginners and advanced students. We have multiple black belts, some with their own academies, that still look forward to Dan's teaching. I, myself, have been very happy with the jiu jitsu that I have learned from Dan and hope to continue to develop my game.
I’ve been training at DCBJJ now for almost 7 years. Always Professional and Martial Training is always world class. If you’re trying to improve your Jiu jitsu and overall Martial arts skill, Dan Covel Jiu Jitsu is where it’s at.
