Coach Royce is incredibly passionate about coaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and it truly shows every day on the mats. I’ve trained under him for 4 years, and without his guidance, discipline, and support, I would not be as successful as I am today. In my time training here, I’ve earned nearly 200 tournament wins, with over 90% being 1st place finishes. One thing that really sets him apart is that he has a degree in childhood development, which makes him exceptionally great at coaching kids as well as adults. He knows how to connect with students of all ages, build confidence, and create a positive learning environment. The facility is always clean, organized, and provides a safe environment for everyone to train, whether you’re a beginner or experienced competitor. Coach Royce genuinely cares about his students and pushes everyone to improve both on and off the mats. If you’re looking for high-level coaching and a great team atmosphere, I
I’ve been training at Ann Arbor BJJ since opening day and have been fortunate to train with the head coach for around two years. During that time, I’ve made tremendous improvements in my skills, but more importantly, I’ve found an incredible community. Everyone here is helpful, respectful, and welcoming. I love the community events they host and the way everyone comes together. I’ve also competed with their guidance and found the coaching extremely effective—my most recent competition ended with a 6-0 record, securing gold. I highly recommend Ann Arbor BJJ to anyone looking to take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seriously, as well as to those looking to be part of a friendly and engaging community.
In short: innovative & excellent bjj instruction and supportive community. Good location for students and fellows living close to the area. Longer story: I’ve been training at aabjj since last June (basically the second week after they opened). Before that, I trained casually for about a year at another academy in the area. I once thought I had absolutely no talent at bjj as I kept failing the movements and made really slow progress till I met coach Royce and started training under his Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) system. At first it was a lil weird to me as it was totally different experience from the information processing (IP) applied by the majority of the bjj academy. Rather than teaching specific techniques step by step, it focused on problem solving under restrictive conditions. Over time, that completely shifted my mindset — from asking “What technique am I supposed to use?” to “What’s happening right now, and how do I adapt?”
This gym is situated in the heart of central campus and is run by a passionate coach. Every class, Coach Miller gives feedback to all his students on how to improve their Jiu-jitsu. The gym is a modern and immaculately clean environment with quality weight lifting equipment. The student body are welcoming and fun to practice with. Coach ensures that the training environment remains safe during all rolls. He also hosts social events for the community to come and gather. All in all, this is a great place to develop a love for Jiu-jitsu.
After many years in BJJ, I switched to AABJJ. It's different from other gyms, and I'm so glad about that. Your time is respected, and you'll get something out of every single practice. Having experienced CLA practices personally convinced me it's better for building skill. My own abilities and tournament performances noticeably improved even after just a few months. Some teammates who switched from another gym have gotten dramatically better now. To be honest, this gym may not be for everyone. You will sweat every single practice, probably within 10 minutes. You don't have to go HAM, but you will be doing live grappling for most of an hour. If you've already been in BJJ, the conceptual framework (and not thinking in terms of moves) might take some adjustment. But if you can buy in and work this way, your abilities will demonstrably improve. Anyway, it's so nice to have a BJJ coach focused on efficacy and skill development. There's no ot
I’ve been training at this gym since I moved to Ann Arbor in August, and I’ve had great experiences here. It’s very clean and there are classes offered at flexible hours to accommodate different schedules. I was nervous to join a brand new gym in a new city, but everyone is super welcoming and encouraging. I’ve learned a lot here, especially with the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) that coach Royce uses. I was able to do my free trial, get a membership, and also recently pause my membership for the summer with no hassle or confusion. The location is a huge bonus as a student who lives on campus/will live near campus next year. If you’re looking for a gym to train at or just try BJJ for the first time, I highly recommend this gym and doing a free trial!
