I have been attending Indianapolis BJJ for about 14 months now, and it has been an amazing experience so far. Started when I was 56 years old. Professor Eldred and his staff are excellent instructors of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It is a completely safe and supportive atmosphere at the academy in which all students respect each other, and work to be great training partners. Like any decision you make in life, you get out of it what you put into it. If you come to class check your ego at the door, willing to learn, and listen/respect your instructors and fellow students, I guarantee you that Professor Eldred and his instructors will make sure you get the training and education you need to build self-confidence and real life skills. Indianapolis BJJ is a great community in which I have gotten to know a number of great people and make real connections. I remember my first class, and make sure I greet any new student I see in class so that they f
I am responding to reviewer End Game's negative comment. His recollection of his visit is a little distorted. I know because I was there. I was participating in the Saturday morning basics class at the academy when End Game barged in and disrupted class without a scheduled appointment. The school's website explicitly says to please make an appointment if you are a non-student and want to check the academy out. The school does not have a "Walk-ins Welcome" policy. Consultations are by appointment only to ensure Professor Eldred can walk you through how the academy works and answer all questions from prospective students. Anyways, back to the Saturday morning class in question. Professor Eldred was in the middle of demonstrating a move in class when End Game bolted in and disrupted class. After Professor Eldred finished instructing us on the technique he approached End Game to get more information since he knew nothing about him. Turns ou
I started training at Indy BJJ around the beginning of 2022 after a few months of training at a different academy in another state. Upon moving back to Indy I did a google search to see what Jiu Jitsu schools were in town. Indy BJJ grabbed my attention because of Professor Eldred's lineage. If you haven't read it be sure to go check out their website and read about who Professor learned his Jiu Jitsu from. If you want a tried and true proven method of self defense then this is the place for you. Each of the professors and instructors are incredibly knowledgable and all bring a little different piece to the puzzle. I learn something new each time I come to class. In addition the sense of community at this academy is unmatched. This isn't your typical after work recreational hobby. You will find yourself becoming very close with your fellow peers in a way that can only be described as family. If you have ever practiced any form of martial
Indy BJJ has the best ethics of any program I've trained with. Leadership is very intentional about prioritizing safety, humility, and long-term growth. The Academy knows what it is culturally and is thus remarkably well insulated from some of the unfortunate dynamics which show up in combat sports. Classes are structured and paced in such a way that beginners survive the drinking from a firehose stage, fundamentals are concretized, and upper belts continue to be challenged. Professor Eldred and the other instructors offer decades of experience with BJJ and related martial arts. Despite the relatively set curriculum of the academy, these eclectic backgrounds provide insight far beyond the sport Jiu Jitsu world. Students look out for one another and share knowledge frequently in Open Mat settings. After 2 years of training here, I have no complaints and would recommend this gym to anyone!
If you are thinking about adding Jiu-Jitsu to your life for one of many reasons - family safety, get in shape, gain confidence in tough situations, make friends, have fun - I strongly encourage you to stop in and check out the Indianapolis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. I am sure you will find exactly what you are looking for. I am 54 and started practicing about 15 months ago. I had zero fight or self defense training when I walked in the door. From the moment I stepped in, I felt welcome by Professor Greg and the entire instruction staff. Prof Greg and his staff of accomplished Jiu-Jitsu instructors work extra hard to meet you at your capability level in order to help you advance and meet your own goals. It can be a little intimidating to walk into the Academy for the first time, but I strongly encourage you to do so. It was one of the best decisions I have made in a long time, and I guarantee you too will have a terrific experience.
I've been training at Indy BJJ for three years so far. I'm a middle aged guy, not much of a competitor, just training so I can keep my family safe. In the process, I've made a ton of friends here, have maintained a 25lb weight loss, have zero injuries, and have gained the strength and confidence that I failed to achieve with cardio or weights. You really owe it to yourself to learn the world's most effective martial art, and Professor Greg Eldred is the most respected, highest ranked Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teacher in the state, so you should do it here. It's a small but busy facility during training hours, so best to make an appointment to talk with Professor Eldred before you arrive!
