Whether you have done martial arts for several years, a few months, or less than a day, Aftermath welcomes anyone and everyone who wants to learn. Professor Jason truly has a unique style of teaching group classes and private one-on-one sessions that keeps students focused and engaged. I can tell he truly cares for his students; whether they decide to compete or just take classes, Prof. Jason goes above and beyond for all his students. On competition days he spends long hours at events assuring his students he’s there for them, reassuring them that it’s not about winning; it’s about learning. It's not surprising that a majority of his students who end up competing do very well. He’s very methodical on how he instructs group classes, and his private lessons are even more focused for anyone who really wants to improve their skills. You can clearly see he genuinely cares for all his students without babying them, and you can tell he loves
We’ve tried several jiu jitsu gyms before landing here, and the difference was clear almost immediately. Coach Jason Cook genuinely cares about ALL the kids he coaches. He pushes them to do their best through discipline, consistency, and effort, but always with respect. He believes in his students, holds them accountable, and is honest with both parents and kids, which I really appreciate. There is zero bullying mentality in his classes. While there is a competitive spirit (which I think is important), it’s balanced with strong sportsmanship and mutual respect… a balance that not many gyms get right. That mindset does start at home, but having a coach who actively reinforces and models it makes a huge difference. The gym has a close-knit, family-oriented vibe. Jason and his wife are both involved, and he brings his kids too. It truly feels like a community, not just a gym. My son feels supported, challenged, and safe here. Because of th
The first day we tried Aftermath we were very impressed. The owner and head instructor Jason is the real deal. I have never seen an instructor pay so much attention to detail. The way technique is taught is precise. Also all the kids are really respectful and nice to each other. No bully mentality that I have seen at other gyms. Coach Jason takes his time with each student to make sure they are learning the technique correctly. The kids and adults all work hard. Also if you’re looking for a jujitsu gym that doesn’t play games during kid class (like most gyms) this is the place for you. My boys used to train at another gym then we started cross training with another gym. Then we were looking for a different gym to cross train with. We found Aftermath. Now we exclusively train with Aftermath.
Aftermath is the place and Jason is the owner/coach every parent is looking for. He teaches discipline, respect, patience, and humility, and helps the kids become not only physically strong, but more importantly, mentally strong. There are so many jujitsu studios in San Diego; we have tried a lot of them, but Aftermath is the real deal. What separates these studios is a different level of integrity, trust, and character of the coaches and owner that we want our son to learn from. If you're looking for a studio to teach your kids how to not only protect themselves, but to learn self-confidence, some tough love, how to push through things that are hard and to never give up on themselves, because Jason won't give up on them, then Aftermath is where you should take them.
Got to visit and take a class at Aftermath and had a great experience. Jason Cook, the head instructor, is a fantastic teacher and very knowledgeable of modern and effective Jiu Jitsu. I know he's an active competitor as well, so he knows what really works and what doesn't. I appreciated his detailed and personalized feedback during both drills and sparring. The other students there were all friendly, controlled, and very skilled. I felt safe sparring with the other students and got some good hard training in. Will make it back to the class when I can! Great gym, great instructor.
Before training at Aftermath I used to train at this one gym for awhile that one of my friends recommended which was really good but the only problem was that it was really far, but lucky another friend of mine mentioned his gym Aftermath which was 5 minutes away from my house. After some thought I decided to give it a try and immediately made it my primary gym do to the great environment of people who I call friends now and a great instructor who really takes the time help teach and show you on how to improve jiu jitsu, so if your thinking about joining I would say that with out a doubt you will have a great experience at Aftermath
