I’ve been at Vilanova for just under a year now, having never trained jiu jitsu before this and I knew after my free trial class that this was the gym for me. Professor Beto is so patient, so kind, so generous and beyond humble and he instills those values into every aspect of the culture here. His staff are of the same stock and everyone who I’ve have met that trains here shares a camaraderie and an eagerness to make others feel welcome. I have seen little to no ego on the mat at Vilanova, making it perfect for anyone looking to get into this sport. I started my son in the youth class a few months after I began and he has loved it. Professor Liz, who instructs the children’s class is so patient and supportive of all the kids in the class, helping them not only to learn and have fun, but teach them invaluable skills and lessons that will instill confidence and knowledge in their future lives. I’ve been training here for almost 4 years now, and my 7 year old and 4 year old sons have been participating in the kids classes for a while now. From the first day Professor Beto and the rest of the Vilanova family have been very welcoming. I can tell he actually cares about his students, fellow professors, and coaches. The BJJ instruction you find here is second to none whether that’s coming directly from Professor Beto or one the other well trained black belts in the academy. They do it because they love the sport and want to share it with the community and it shows. A family owned local business with excellent instruction from top notch BJJ practitioners with a history of competitive success and real passion for the sport, very clean facility and a great community of training partners. They offer so many class options (kids and adults) to accommodate their students’ schedules so even the busiest of people should be able to find a time to come train. Whether your goal is to compete at a high level or just get in shape while learning valuable self-defense skills at a place with a welcoming atmosphere, this academy checks all boxes. Being a Military family we have attended four different BJJ academies and visited several others. Previously it was something that we insisted on the children doing just to get them out of the house and do something physical. This time we did not insist, but they decided to train after watching Professor Beto teach several youth classes. He really keeps them engaged while teaching them this awesome martial art. My wife and I have also started training at Vilanova. I immensely enjoy Professor Beto's style of instructing and feel that I have already improved my technique in a short time due to his methods and details. The other Vilanova BJJ professors, students, and coaches that I have met to this point are top notch instructors, training partners, and people.
My son has been attending Vilanova’s youth classes for about a year, and I continue to be impressed by them. The coaches are supportive yet firm. Students know they are in a safe environment where they can grow and learn, and they know their professors will hold them accountable to the clear expectations that are laid out during classes. Because of this, classes run smoothly and students benefit from a tone that is both serious and fun (no easy feat for a large, mixed age group). In addition, Vilanova’s commitment to fostering community is impressive. So many establishments and businesses have building community in their mission statements, but Vilanova is one of the few that truly live up to it. I have trained at several bjj academies and Villanova is by far the best place I've come across. The instruction is top notch and Beto is thoughtful and articulate in his lessons. It is easy to see how effective Professor Beto's methods are when you see how beautifully his long term student's practice jiu jitsu. Also, the adults are a great group of people who will help you learn and feel safe (I'm sure the kids classes are the same). There is a new academy (compared to most of the pictures in the reviews here) which is clean and has about 1.75x the mat space as before. Five stars. Highly recommended.
