Ares East Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the kind of place where you walk in as a stranger and leave feeling like part of the team. The atmosphere is friendly, welcoming, and disciplined — exactly what you’d expect from a serious BJJ academy. The coaches break things down clearly, patiently, and with real respect, whether you’re a beginner or already experienced. Training sessions are tough in the best way possible. Every class pushes you, but never past your limit, and every roll feels like a chance to level up. The instructors pay close attention to technique and help correct the small details that actually make a huge difference. You can tell they genuinely care about your progress and growth — they don’t just teach, they invest in you. And the community is honestly one of the best parts. Everyone is supportive, helpful, and easy to connect with. The gym is clean, well-organized, and the schedule is convenient. If you’re looking for a place
6 weeks in currently. My five year old trains in the Young Warriors program and I try and train in the adult program. They're very good at their young kids program, keeping it fun and interesting for the kids while introducing them to moving their bodies and playing jiujitsu. Due to life my attendance in the adult program has been very sporadic, but when I'm able to make it work the instructors and class are super welcoming and willing to work with an old, slow man. I've attended the afternoon fundamentals class and the morning mixed levels class. All three adult instructors (morning, afternoon, and the nogi instructor) were welcoming and adapted the content to my level, ensuring I was paired with someone able to safely roll with my high calorie self.
Ares East Mesa BJJ Academy is an outstanding, family-oriented gym with an incredible atmosphere. Owner Alex is very helpful, welcoming, and genuinely cares about every student’s progress, which sets the tone for the entire academy. All of the coaches are highly knowledgeable and take the time to break techniques down in a way that works for all skill levels. Special mention to Coach Steve Benton, who is amazing with all ages and stands out for his patience, attention to detail, and ability to make learning both effective and enjoyable. With flexible hours and a strong, supportive community, this gym is a great place for individuals and families looking to train and grow in Jiu-Jitsu.
From Texas - Solid No Gi…reached out before my visit to inquire what I needed to be prepared for. Received a very timely reply from the owner Prof Alex advising “you are welcome here” with a few specifics. Showed up and the gym was open 20 minutes ahead of class time at 6am…had about 7-8 bodies for the morning crew (young bendies to mature heavies) and we stayed busy with warm up drills, instruction, then positional rounds all related to the lesson plan. I received detailed instruction for the technique we were working that is something I’ll be working into my game for sure. Very clean, timely, well structured class, and I’m leaving a fan that will be back whenever we’re visiting family out here. Thank you!
I really appreciate Ares East Mesa & their amazing coaches for creating a highly disciplined Jiu Jitsu facility with great energy being invested into our community & the next generation! My husband, son & I all joined & love the new skills & muscles we gain at each class. Their coaches are phenomenal! -During the first 6 weeks, I lost 20 pounds attending 3 awesome classes a week… I’m loving all the extra energy! Thank You Coaches Steve, Patrick & Alex!
I pass through Mesa regularly and visited this Ares East location as training spot whenever I'm here. I joined the morning classes and Professor Dee was very hospitable. I really enjoyed the X Guard sequence he was teaching for the week. Prof Dee is a very technical and professional instructor with a very digestable teaching style. He controls the class really well and is mindful about all the student's different levels and how to partner them accordingly. Great training here. A lot of tough and technical sparring. They have a good range of small to large people, great for variety. Thanks for having me and will be stopping in whenever I'm in the area. Thank you to Alex and Prof Dee.
