Snap Down
Also known as: Snapdown · Head Snap · Snap-and-Spin (combo)
Yank the head and posture down as your opponent pressures in, converting their forward energy into your front headlock.
Transition · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at White belt
Starts from Standing as the either grappler → lands in Front Headlock.
The details that make it work
- Time it against pressure: snap when they push into you, not when they hang back.
- Use collar tie + tricep or chin strap; snap through their head, aiming their forehead at the mat.
- Circle as you snap — the angle change is what actually breaks them down.
Where it goes wrong
- Snapping with arms only from a static position; the snap is timing plus hips, not a curl.
How opponents counter it
- Posture through and reconnect the hips
- Shoot as their weight commits forward
Is the Snap Down legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
