O Goshi

Also known as: Hip Toss · Major Hip Throw · Ogoshi

The fundamental hip throw: arm around the waist, hips in and under, and your opponent rides over your hip to the mat.

Takedown · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 3/5 · Usually learned at White belt

Starts from Clinch as the either grappler → lands in Side Control.

The details that make it work

  1. The back-step entry must put your hips BELOW theirs and fully across their center.
  2. Pull their arm tight across your chest — a loose arm is space to slip out the back.
  3. Lift with the legs and turn; the throw is a deadlift with a steering wheel.
