Lasso Sweep
Also known as: Lasso Helicopter Sweep · Leg Lasso Sweep · Lasso Scissor
With the lasso threaded deep around one arm, their posture is on a leash: scissor the free leg or elevate underneath and roll them over the trapped shoulder.
Sweep · Gi only · Difficulty 3/5 · Usually learned at Blue belt
Starts from Lasso Guard as the lasso player → lands in Open Guard .
The details that make it work
Thread the lasso deep — shin behind the armpit, not just around the elbow; the deeper the thread, the less they can posture. Combine with a hook or sole-of-foot on the far hip; they fall over the corner the lasso removes. Ride the momentum up on top, keeping the sleeve until you are past their legs.
Where it goes wrong A shallow lasso at the wrist that turns into their pass grip when they circle the arm out.
How opponents counter it Circle the trapped arm out before the thread deepens Stack forward through the lasso and backstep
Is the Lasso Sweep legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
