Worm Guard Entry
Also known as: Lapel Feed · Worm Wrap
Free your opponent’s lapel, feed it under your own lead leg, and hand their posture to your leg — the entry into the lapel-guard labyrinth.
Transition · Gi only · Difficulty 4/5 · Usually learned at Purple belt
Starts from Closed Guard as the guard player → lands in Worm Guard.
The details that make it work
- Strip the lapel out of their belt and feed it BEHIND their same-side leg, under your shin, to your other hand.
- The lapel-to-leg connection replaces your grip strength — once locked, relax your hands and manage angles.
- Open your closed guard only after the lapel is wrapped; sequence is everything.
Where it goes wrong
- Feeding the lapel with the guard already open, giving a free pass window during the transition.
How opponents counter it
- Kill the lapel grip before it feeds under the leg
- Backstep away from the wrapped side immediately
