Knee Shield Entry
Also known as: Z-Guard Entry · Knee Shield Frame
Slide your top knee across their chest or hip line to convert flat half guard into z-guard — the frame that buys back the space pressure passing takes away.
Transition · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 1/5 · Usually learned at White belt
Starts from Half Guard as the half guard player → lands in Z-Guard .
The details that make it work
The shin frames diagonally across their torso, foot hooked at their hip, knee at their shoulder line. Frame with the skeleton, not muscle: knee shield plus a forearm frame makes their pressure carry itself. From the shield, attack — it is a platform for K-guard, butterfly switches, and kimuras, not a place to rest.
Where it goes wrong Holding a flat, square knee shield forever and calling survival a guard game.
How opponents counter it Collapse the knee line with a body lock Backstep to the other side of the shield
Is the Knee Shield Entry legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
