Kesa Gatame Escape

Also known as: Scarf Hold Escape · Bridge-and-Roll (kesa) · Uphill Escape

Answer the scarf hold before it settles: free your trapped shoulder, connect your hands or hug the waist, and bridge them over your head — rolling from pinned to pinning.

Escape · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 2/5 · Usually learned at White belt

Starts from Kesa Gatame as the bottom player → lands in Side Control.

The details that make it work

  1. Do NOT push with the free arm across your body; hug their waist or lock your hands around their back.
  2. Walk your legs toward their back to load their weight uphill onto your chest.
  3. Bridge explosively over your own shoulder toward their head-side; follow through on top.
