The most feared finish in modern no-gi: with the knee line locked in the saddle, catch the heel and rotate — the knee’s ligaments take the torque. The position does the work; the heel is only the handle.
Submission · Heel Hook · No-gi · Difficulty 4/5 · Usually learned at Purple belt
Starts from Saddle as the attacking player → ends the match (submission).
The details that make it work
Kill the hip and the knee line before touching the heel — an uncontrolled opponent simply rotates with the turn.
Catch the heel in the crook of your elbow or wrist blade; their toes trap against your ribs.
Finish by rotating your CHEST with a hip bridge, slowly — this lock injures before it hurts.
Where it goes wrong
Hunting the heel while the knee line is loose, burning the position for nothing.
Cranking fast in training — the tap must come before the pop, and often barely does.
How opponents counter it
Boot the foot ("hide the heel") and clear the knee line
Roll in the direction of the torque and chase top position
Is the Inside Heel Hook from the Saddle legal in competition?
IBJJF: legal ONLY in no-gi at brown and black belt (since 2021); illegal in the gi at every belt. Legal in ADCC and virtually all sub-only events.
