Deep Half Entry
Also known as: Deep Half Sweep Entry · Homer Simpson Entry (variation)
Dive from regular half guard underneath their hips, hugging one thigh with your whole body — trading the pressure war for the sweeping leverage of deep half.
Transition · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 3/5 · Usually learned at Blue belt
Starts from Half Guard as the half guard player → lands in Deep Half Guard .
The details that make it work
Use their forward pressure: as they drive, swing underneath their base leg and hug it high on your chest. Your head hides tight against their thigh — space around your head is where crossfaces and darces live. Immediately off-balance: their weight sits on your hips, so small bridges steer their whole body.
Where it goes wrong Diving under while their arm hunts your neck, entering deep half already inside a choke.
How opponents counter it Sprawl the hips back before the dive connects Attack the exposed neck during the transition
Is the Deep Half Entry legal in competition?
Legal in all major rulesets at all levels (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only). Rules change — always confirm against the current official rulebook for your event.
