Arm Drag from Butterfly
Also known as: Seated Arm Drag · Drag from Hooks
Marcelo Garcia’s bread and butter: from seated butterfly, drag their arm across your body and slide your chest past their shoulder to the back before they can re-square.
Back Take · Gi & No-gi · Difficulty 3/5 · Usually learned at Blue belt
Starts from Butterfly Guard as the butterfly player → lands in Back Control .
The details that make it work
Two-on-one on their wrist and tricep; the drag pulls their arm across YOUR center line as you scoot your hips out. The hips move, not just the hands — your body travels past the dragged shoulder. Chest sticks to their upper back; take the seatbelt as your hooks chase.
Where it goes wrong Dragging the arm while your hips stay planted in front of them.
How opponents counter it Re-face instantly, elbow back to the ribs Forward pressure to flatten the drag angle
